Project Background

For my final project in Digital Tools: Layout & Design, I merged traditional Indonesian culture with modern design by focusing on Nasi Tumpeng, a dish central to Indonesia's communal celebrations and cultural identity. Inspired by the vibrant festivities of Eid al-Adha and Independence Day, I chose Nasi Tumpeng for its symbolic value and its role in Javanese cuisine. This project not only acknowledges the culinary tradition but also highlights its significance in fostering community and gratitude.

To modernize this cultural emblem, I developed a customizable sticker pack that allows users to creatively design their own Nasi Tumpeng. This approach not only pays tribute to Indonesian heritage but also encourages individual expression and engagement with cultural symbols in a contemporary context. Through this project, I aimed to demonstrate that the whole is indeed greater than the sum of its parts, by blending tradition with personal creativity and design innovation.

Project Layout Overview

Designing the Logo

Nasi Tumpeng is a cone-shaped rice dish that unites the diversity of Indonesia's myriad culinary traditions. It is accompanied by a selection of Indonesian dishes, including vegetables and meats. We, as Indonesians, typically prepare Tumpeng for significant events such as Independence Day, birthdays, and more.

Tumpengan Bersama translating to “Eating Tumpeng Together” in Indonesian, builds on the tradition of Nasi Tumpeng as a symbol of unity and celebration. This sticker pack invites you to creatively construct your own Tumpeng, offering an engaging way to learn about Indonesian culinary traditions. You are encouraged to mix, match, and assemble your unique Tumpeng on the designated page, immersing yourself in a rich cultural experience.

About Tumpengan Bersama

Symbolism of Tumpeng

Symbolism of Tumpeng

Nasi Kuning

A fragrant Indonesian dish cooked with coconut milk and turmeric. There are a couple of reasons why Indonesians use Nasi Kuning as the base for their Tumpeng. The cone-shaped rice is a representation of the holy mountain. The height of the cone symbolizes the greatness of Allah (God). The yellow rice symbolizes good fortune, wealth, and dignity.

Hard-Boiled Egg

The egg white symbolizes virtuousness, and the egg yolk stands for the light of God.

Empal Gepuk

An Indonesian sweet and spicy fried beef dish.

Tempeh Goreng

A fried version of traditional Indonesian food made from fermented soybeans.

Ayam Goreng

An Indonesian dish consisting of chicken deep-fried in oil.

Sambal

Indonesian chili. We, Indonesians, love and handle our spices very seriously.

[ Packaging Design ]

This packaging design draws inspiration from the traditional Indonesian method of wrapping street foods with pandan leaves, secured with a simple toothpick. The natural pandan leaves not only infuse a subtle fragrance that evokes authenticity but also contribute to an eco-friendly and culturally resonant presentation. Each leaf neatly enfolds the sticker sheets, symbolizing the care and craftsmanship that goes into Indonesian food preparation. This tactile experience of unwrapping mirrors the communal and interactive spirit of enjoying Tumpeng, offering a sensory prelude to the creative act of building your own Tumpeng with the stickers inside.
